How do I know if I have chronic insomnia?
Wondering if what you’re experiencing might be chronic insomnia? Here are five common signs that your sleep struggles could be more than just an occasional bad night:
- Can’t fall asleep or waking up multiple times
- Trouble sleeping 3x a week for 3 months or more
- Can’t sleep even though you set aside enough time to sleep
- Feel drained, exhausted, unable to function well during the day
- Worry about sleep such that it’s making you anxious
If one or more of these sound like you, you may have chronic insomnia. Chronic insomnia generally does not go away on its own, which is why it's important to take steps toward a treatment so that your sleep can become restful again.
CBT-I is the expert-recommended insomnia treatment
The most effective treatment for chronic insomnia is CBT-I (cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia), recommended by the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
Why sleep medications are not recommended as a long-term solution
While it may seem easier to take sleep medications, sleep experts do not recommend that as a long-term solution because the medications only address the surface symptoms but do not address the root cause of your insomnia. In addition, medications often come with side effects, risk of dependency and the need to continuously increase the dosage for effectiveness.
Why choose CBT-I?
CBT-I is the recommended first-line treatment for chronic insomnia because it tackles the root cause of poor sleep. Unlike medication, it’s entirely drug-free and side-effect-free, helping you build lasting skills to retrain your mind, reset your sleep habits, and achieve natural, restorative rest for the long-term.
